BRITISH SELECTION, 12TH NON GRATA FILM AND VIDEO FESTIVAL

The Vacuum Cleaner. Prayers to Sainsbury's. 4’00 minutes
The vacuum cleaner is an artist and activist collective of one fashioning radical social and ecological change. By employing various creative legal and illegal tactics and forms the vacuum cleaner attempts to disrupt concentrations of power and reverse the impending collapse of planet earth.

Minou Norouzi. Imago. 8’27 minutes.
Conceived as a hypothesis that ones favorite line from a movie contains within it the essence of a person’s ideal, a passion, conviction or sense of self, IMAGO maps a series of frozen moments in the Los Angeles acting community.
Each actor is seen in their day job delivering their favorite line from a movie, mapping the day to day architectural space where desire is incubated.

Christian Siever, Cleaner- 2’12 minutes.
Here's a video that's quite characteristic of the UK in that it shows a) how good the British are in maintaining public order while b) being terrified of something disrupting it. You can see how swiftly they put their routine into action. Notice the guy running past and the woman with the radio at 5 seconds, the yellow warning cone at 14 seconds and the cleaner's cart at 28. The video was made at London Liverpool Street station in 2003 at the height of another terrorist alert (the war was just about to start). The sound in the background is actually the nearby underground station being evacuated because of a suspect package. That's a coincidence. The video ends rather abruptly because they caught the artist on CCTV and threw him out of the building.

Jon Purnell. The Sound Of Grenville- 3’00 minutes
The sound Of Grenville is a karaoke adaptation describing the activities or the Art group Cack-U-like. It sings to the Turner Prize winner 2002, Grenville Davey an explanation of the responses to such art performances of Cack-u-like’s as demonstration Against Toffs in Art as well as Badges Against Toffs in art. It relates the futility of radicalism in art as any creative act no matter how peripheral is inevitably trapped in the circus of arts overly bourgeoisie/capitalist web.

Victoria Melody. Vent Head. 13’48 minutes
Vent Head explores unpleasant aspects of life and suggests a playful quick fix solution to the world’s anger problems. The form of a portable ‘venting’ contraption that inflates over your head and enable the wearer to scream and shout, without sound escaping. The film acts a soapbox in which the marketing strategies of our consumerist society are questioned. It wonders whether peace could also be marketed on TV, probably the best place to reach the mass consciousness.

Rick Leach. Never, Never, Never Shall Be. 1’20 min.
'Never never never shall be' cross references the identity crisis of transvestism with Britain 's current crisis of national identity. Writer Marjorie Garber describes transvestism as 'not just a category crisis of male and female, but the crisis of category itself*'. Transvestism is that semiotic second hand jigsaw-puzzle with the pieces from many disparate sets all jumbled up in one box. It throws the signifiers of gender into chaos and confronts us with a threat to reconsider what they might actually mean, if anything at all. Intersecting this with national identity too throws up this question of what a flag or any signifier of place, territory or home actually means.

Väsitav on see asjaosalistelegi, ehkki praeguse loo kangelasteks on meie kunstiilmas aktiivselt tegutsevad Lapin, Keskküla, Elken, Helme, Treier, Saar jmt. (Teet Veispak, Postimees)
Kadi Estland and Killu Sukmit are the real “flowers of evil” with their pointlessly lengthy video Ass fucker (2006). Probably imitating the form of a local television show Ass Kicker (Ärapanija), it messes with the undercurrents of Estonian art life. It also bothers the active participants of Estonian art scene like Lapin, Keskküla, Elken, Helme, Treier, Saar and others whom the video depicts. (Teet Veispak, Postimees)

This work, made in collaboration with Jaan Paavle and Risto Laius, is really a short documentary film. It expresses frustrated physical and sexual restrictions and is somehow a desperate, though enigmatic warning. Perhaps it also expresses the fear of getting old or becoming handicapped and less capable physicaly while still needing to express oneself.

„Let’s play together“ was realised on the basis of the material that I have been recording during the annual picnics organised in Korzkiew near by Kraków (2004, 2005) for the children and youth from the Centres of Special Education and Care as well as for their one-time pupils.
An entertainment and amusement is the background for the film, its plot is a dance and the interpretation of songs performed by the handicapped children. The camcorder is focused on individual shows or group scenes, especially those that reveal opposing relations of behaviours between kids and their grown-up carers.
The consecutive frames/pictures appear the „film star“ attitudes of children, often their unusual imitative abilities in performing well known smash hits and also their excellent feeling for rhythm.
The free form of the movie is constructed as sequences of scenes fluently merging each with the succeeding one. The sequenced flow of images with singing and dancing „performers“ in the tact of music characterize the movie as an incessant, spontaneous musical „show“.
„Let‘s play together“ affirms the exhilarating side of life and positive features of persons although their physical and mental disabilities made them lead a different life, on the periphery of its mainstream.
I have been interested in a human physiognomy for a long time. A face is not an integral part of body. There is something in a face what attracts my attention. The face is -an interface, monitor and communication’s device. Since five years I have been working on the cycle „A Banal Collection“. This comparative cycle is based - to a certain extent - on juxtaposition of the images of medieval and ancient sculptures with the faces of real people. When I started working on my project „the Blessed and the Damned“ in 2004, I had been looking for contemporary counterparts for the figures of 'the Blessed Ones' whose images in medieval sculpture were often represented by the faces of mentally handicapped people. In this way I arrived at the Centre of Special Education and Care in Krakow where I had spent two years to comprehend better the nature of persons stricken with a mental disability. „Let’s play together“ was realized as a supplement to this project to comment one of an aspect of its idea.

Film valmis EKAs Jaak Kilmi dokfilmi kursuse lõputööna. Vaatlen pensionäride elu ja tegemisi, jäädes võimalikult objektiivseks. Eeskujuks oli R. Marani film „Harilik rästik”, millest sündis ka filmi pealkiri „Harilik pensionär”. Kuna tahtsin filmis näidata pensionäride nii halbu kui häid külgi, aga puutusin kokku vaid heade pensionäridega, lisasin filmi algusse vihase Vox Populi kõne, kus vanamutt sõimab Šmiguni olümpiavõitu. Sealt liigub lugu sissejuhatusse, kus hääl selgitab, et kuigi näeme iga päev pensionäre kuhugi tõttamas, on nende motiivid siiamaani varjatuks jäänud. Nüüd proovime selgeks teha, milline on harilik pensionär.
Documentary educational film about Estonian retired people (pensioners). They live in their own little world, containing trips to cheap markets, cemetery yards and social center. Some of them are bad-mannered and hate everything. They call to radio and complain about Estonian politics. Sometimes it goes to absurd, like at the start of the movie, when pensioner calls to radio and tells how she hates Estonian skier Kristina Shmigun, who have won gold medal.
Other pensioners are happy and positive. They make fun of the life and laugh at themselves. Four women who agreed to participate in my film were positive heroines. Three of them practise show-dance and one of them have acted in several films and has a new boyfriend. Some pensioners live for very long: at the end of the movie you see me dancing with an old man who is a former loyar and recently celebrated his 102th birthday. He regularly goes to social center’s dancing parties. Film shows that there is no common pensioner, they all are different, though there are some common features, too.

Iluduse rawitsemine / Beauty Cure
Kestvus: 00:08:19
Aasta: 2006
Idee, montaaž, heli: Fideelia-Signe Roots
Operaator: Sven Arulaid

Tegemist on järjekordse õppefilmiga. Teemaks on ilusa välimuse säilitamine. Filmis etteloetavad tekstid on pärit Margot Popp’i raamatust „Iluduse rawitsemine” (Tallinn „Teaduse kirjastus” 1914). Lugemisvara on suunatud eeskätt naistele.
Oma filmis pöörasin soorollid pea peale, asendades sõna „naine” sõnaga „mees”. Illustratiivsete näidetena on toodud fotod eesti poliitikutest.
This is an educational movie about how to stay beautiful. The texts come from an old book „Beauty Cure” (Tallinn 1914) by Margot Popp. The target group is women but I have turned it around and replaced with men. All examples are illustrated by Estonian politics. We learn about men’s lips, facial skin and eyes. We find out that it is impossible to make large mouth smaller if the chinbone is big and a huge nose is possible to cure only with a sharp surgery knife.

Name of art collective: CoachTV (emily eastridge & raishad glover)
Country: North America
Dates of birth: 1984 (emily) 1981 (raishad)
title of the video & duration: "On The Set" (5 minutes)

synopsis: "On The Set" is the experimental documentation of the process of two collaborative artists (CoachTV) in the studio combined with  equally experimental, conceptually thoughtful animations. By blending the spontaneous with the calculated, CoachTV explores and dismantles the formatting of standardized television shows (theme song, show, commercial, show, cedits). The result is a completed and polished work-in-progress where ideas of reality, performance and the notion of "a finished piece" are all in question. Aside from tampering with video structures and expectactions, the artists of CoachTV inform their actions with the juxtaposition and morphing of stereotypes, intimacies and persona work in order to create new dialog around social imagery.

Hippies from Hell are a group of hackers, techies, artists, writers and puzzlers. In the eighties they published hacker magazine Hacktic and in 1993 they started the first Dutch Internet-provider, xs4all, thus opening the Internet for the general public. Apart from this they throw wild parties and organize open-air hacker festivals, using the Internet as their social platform. On their mailing list they discuss almost every aspect of our technology infested society. The Dutch hackers, as the hippies were called initially, are a special group within the international hacker movement, which they helped create for a large part.
In the film artists play with hardware, young hippies hack their school-calculators, lock pickers open locks without a key: hacking is not just fooling around with technology, it is an attitude, an activity, a verb.

Music: "Hurdy Hurry" by Phill Niblock from Touch Works for Hurdy Gurdy and Voice, 2000 Touch Records

This tape was made with the Montreal (Canada) action/abstract painter Graham Cantieni for a special event in honor of his retirement from the function of Professor of Visual Arts at the University of Quebec in Three Rivers where he taught since the '80s. With the help of a miniature surveillance camera, approximately the size of a lipstick, which was fastened to the hand of the artist while he painted, the video presents the point of view of the paint-brush during Cantieni's creative process. Brush stroke after brush stroke, the painting emerges in all its texture and physicality, abstract and palpable, to the minimal drone music of NY intermedia composer Phill Niblock which Cantieni specifically invited to participate. Based on a collaborative concept by Liberovskaya, Niblock and Cantieni.

Filmi autorina tundsin huvi paralleelreaalsuse vastu, milles elavad tänapäeva Eestis venekeelt kõnelejad, ehk "pribaldid". Sotsiaalselt kuulun poluvernikute hulka, kellel puudub rahvuslik identiteet.

The Ready: Private Dancers is an attempt to explore my conditioning as a trained contemporary dancer. Another goal in the work is to explore quite generic choreographic approaches with toilet rolls. The clockwork titilation layered with mechanical toying of the dancing toilet rolls is also intended to be a low-fi, cheap-trick play on the sophistocated computer-generated fashions of animation within the current age. In addition to this, I could not remember Tina Turner’s lyrics.

The task of covering myself in cardboard is a near impossible one, perhaps child-like in play, perhaps questioning whether it is really possible to construct my identity. The awkwardness of the angle of the shot is because the camera has been set-up in a shonky-low-fi manner to get the optimium viewing range of the bed scene, which is also intended to enhance the feel of ridiculous constriction I am imposing on myself. The white costume has references to a range of cultural locations, such as the cricket-player as well as the hospital intern/nurse, and the cardboard layering is a play on the suicide-bommer as he gets ready for his work. Even though the work is set in a site laiden with oedipal connotations (where I am ’acting-up’ on the bed of my very own conception – the photos in the background are my brother and I as infants) Tony and His Mirror is also an attempt to both seek approval from the mirror I am facing while I film plus rebel from ’the law’ that I have been nurtured through (I was always told by my mother to never put my shoes on a bed).

The Group Sinestetico proposes him in "way sinestetica" that is using and raising the sinestesia in art, both in the performance, in the action, in the image, and in the contatto/contagio, therefore using video, photo and video-installation.
Already our manifesto (1999 year of foundation) it has a precise reading and a careful vision of the propose us in way sinestetica, therefore with the involvement of all the 5 senses, obviously also the "sixth sense."
Here then the job of the group: We introduce and we put to comparison the man and his/her quotidianità, exalting the virtues of it or reporting the abuses and the overbearances of it.
In these two video , two problem list are looked out upon, first: "Censured: " Censorship him censorship no " leaving one free interpretation of his to the spectator " ".
Around second video the words Also kill" we face the problem list of the word, therefore through the visual poetry we introduce a message that has two interpretations, the war, the suppression, the death.
The "decisional word " in this sense has ownership of death as much as a kalasnikof can have him/it.
Both the jobs are drawn by performance.
Using a sentence "stolen" we dismiss there: EVERY THING AND' CALLED Á. GIUSTIFICARE HIS/HER OWN PRESENCE EXCEPT THE WORK OF ART.

8 min 23 sec

Un-titled references the existing conditions from which a person is born; a nation, a state or a family. Usually an untitled  person constructs personal history from the oral histories or stories of ancestors which are handed down through individual families.  This oral history  is not often recorded and is not seen as authentic, interesting or relevant to a state or a nation and therefore the personal history of an individualıs heritage can become lost or deemed apocryphal.  Marshall Mcluhan wrote that when  the printed word became widely accessible nationalism began to rise.  The black and white section of the video alludes to the uniformity, symbolism and resulting violence when the identity of a nation becomes more important than an individualıs life.
Un-titled was inspired by the theories of  ideology  by Louis Althusser and explores those ideas within the structure of place, community, and family.   The video opens with a white background and the sound is a narration of the story of  the artistıs grandfatherıs 1970ıs journey to Germany to find his relatives.  He developed a friendship with the German family for twenty years and it wasnıt until his death that the German  family revealed that they were not related to her grandfather.  Home-movies from the first meeting in Weingarten, Germany are spliced with the home-movies of her grandfatherıs hometown from the 1940ıs and 1950ıs.  Each reel is divided vertically and the left side is mirrored on the right creating a new unfolding landscape of both towns. The sound of the video is a recording of  Louisville Opera singer Dane Waters performing the two German poems of desire from Carl Orffıs Carmina Burana.  Un-titled questions  the possibility or even necessity of  reality
in an individualıs  experience and construction of identity.

5. Duration: 6,40 minutes
6. year of production: 2004

The film presents a strange intertwining of two events—a concert by a military band, dedicated to May 9 (Victory Day), and the Mongolian government’s propaganda regarding the protection of the population against SARS.
The events took place in a public square in Ulan-Bator during the SARS quarantine. The large public, wearing breathing masks, was calmly administering to itself the atypical treatment based on the repertory of the military band, which was steeped in the patriotic campaign launched by the USSR in the ranks of the Red Army after the conquest of Berlin in 1945. The famous repertory was adopted and assimilated in full by Mongolians after the armed conflicts in Manchuria and Halhin-Gol, in which the USSR participated too. The solo performers competed with each other entertaining the bemasked audience, not forgetting of course the famous “Katyusha” nor the well-known and much loved “Smuglyanka-Moldavanka”.
The performance of the military band and the stance of the Mongolians is perceived and interpreted today as a delayed reminiscence of the armed conflict, as well as a performance resembling a collective manipulation.

Eesti lood: „Udmurtiast armastusega“
Estonian Stories: From Udmurtia with Love
27-minute documentary film

About 2285 km from Estonia in the little village of Kotomka, the Udmurt maiden Ljudmila and Estonian man Aivar get married. After the wedding, the long journey to Estonia, a new ordering of the affairs of her life, and adaptation to life here in early capitalism awaits Ljudmila. She must leave behind her job, her relatives, friends and her dear Udmurtia.
Two years have passed in the meantime. Has Ljudmila adapted to her life here in Estonia? What does she dream of now, what does she miss the most? Has living here made her happier? Did she really make the right decision when she left her home behind?
Ljudmila speaks openly about her feelings and looks back at what has happened in the meantime.

Eesti lood: „Udmurtiast armastusega“ 27 minutilise dokumentaalfilmi sünopsis
Filmi tegevus toimub Udmurtias ja Eestis. Filmi esimeses osas näeme Kotomka külas toimuvat Udmurdi-Eesti segapulma kogu selle värvikirevuses. Pulmaliste tegevust saadab pidev laulmine. Pulm kestis mitu päeva, kuid meie filmis on antud sellest võimalikult adekvaatne esimese päeva kokkuvõte. Osaliseks eesmärgiks on vaatajale vahendada osaliseltki udmurtide pulmakombestikku ja elu-olu, mis pulmatseremooniast kõrvale jääb. Põhiliselt on aga kaamera jälginud filmi peategelast, udmurditar Ljudmilat.
Pärast pulmi ootab Ludmilat pikk tee Eestisse, uus elukorraldus ja kohanemine siinse varakapitalistliku eluga. Ljudmila on hariduselt ajaloolane.
Kuidas Ludmila on kohanenud siinse eluga? Kuidas on Ludmila siin rakendust on püüdnud leida?
Udmurdimaal kasvatatakse lapsi rangemalt. Väljakujunenud iseloomuga, mitte just esimeses nooruses naisel, pole kerge nõudmistele alluda.
Lõpuks, naastes Eestimaale, on Ljudmila juba endas kindlam.Ljudmilas on aga väga palju optimismi tuleviku suhtes.
